Keyshia Cole, 11:11 Reset © EpicKeyshia Cole shines on the thoughtful “Best Friend,” a promo single from her seventh studio album, ’11:11 Reset.’

Keyshia Cole was once a force in R&B. Of course, she was a force when the genre of R&B was more of a course as a whole.  However, in 2014, Cole dropped the worst album of her career, Point of No Return. Furthermore, it didn’t sell.  Now, following an incredibly quiet, lackadaisical promotional campaign, she releases her new album, 11:11 Reset.  In advance of the album, Cole released four singles: “You,” “Incapable,” “Best Friend,” and “Vault.”

“Best Friend” commences with a brief intro before Keyshia Cole gets to work.  The production work is lush, firmly planted in the urban contemporary/adult contemporary R&B style.  Slickly produced, it’s modern enough, yet has classic cues in play as well. This is clearly in Cole’s lane; she delivers excellent vocals, performing this big ballad.  Besides her awesome lead vocals, the harmonized backing vocals shine on the chorus.

Some other notes about “Best Friend.”  The subject matter is thoughtful. This is all about dedication within a relationship; monogamy. Cole asserts that she’ll be her best friend.  Additionally, the bridge is ‘high-flying,’ further elevating the soulfulness and sincerity of the song. Finally, Cole delivers superb ad-libs on the final chorus.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Keyshia Cole delivers an enjoyable, well-rounded performance on “Best Friend.” This is definitely in the running for the best single she’s issued from 11:11 Reset.  It doesn’t supplant the gems of her career, but it’s constructed in the style of those hits.
