Welcome to After Dark 🕛 🌃, a column featuring songs that are best suited for nighttime, specifically, the bedroom.  Many of the records featured here raise eyebrows, as well as the temperature! These After Dark tunes focus on the universal three-letter word:  SEX. Theme & Lyrics

vanilla milkshake“My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard / And they’re like, it’s better than yours / Damn right, it’s better than yours / I can teach you, but I have to charge.”  Woo! 🎵 “Milkshake” by 🎙 Kelis is truly a once-in-a-lifetime hit. The R&B artist exudes confidence and sexiness on this 2003 standout from 💿 Tasty, which peaked at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  While Kelis has had a few hits, none has impacted the charts or pop culture than “Milkshake.”

“I know you want it

The thing that makes me

What the guys go crazy for

They lose their minds

The way I wind

I think it’s time.”

Bitmoji Image“Milkshake’ is undoubtedly sexual.  That said, Kelis is more suggestive than explicit, leaving things to the imagination regarding what that ‘milkshake’ may entail.  Notably, one annotation from Genius suggests she may be referencing a specific act (oral).  If you read into it and let your dirty mind 🎵 “Go to Town” #Doja Cat, sure, it’s certainly possible (“The next his eyes’ll squint / Then he’s picked up your scent”).  Still, I personally don’t hear “Milkshake” that specifically, and if Kelis’ comments about the song are to be believed, she doesn’t consider it specific either.  This is a fun and playful song chocked full of sexual innuendo.  Furthermore, 🎛 The Neptunes were truly able to deliver some of their most cutting-edge, innovative production. This is 🎛 Pharrell Williams and 🎛 Chad Hugo at their best!

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageSo, how’s the best way to characterize 🎵 “Milkshake”? Take this fun, naughty, and sexy gem with a grain of salt! Sure, you get utterly filthy with it, but in my eyes, this Kelis standout is sexy without overanalyzing.  “La-la, la-la, la / Warm it up / La-la, la-la, la / The boys are waiting!”  Worth noting, 🎙 BIA sampled “Milkshake” in her 2021 banger, 🎵 “Can’t Touch This”.
