Up-and-coming R&B artist Kehlani drops her official debut album, SweetSexySavage, on January 27, 2017. Prior to SweetSexySavage, she released a Grammy-nominated mixtape, You Should Be Here, in 2015. Ahead of SweetSexySavage, Kehlani dropped numerous singles, including “Distraction” and “CRZY.” She returns with another gem, “Undercover.”

“Undercover” features slick production work, quick tempo, and a hella sexy vibe.  The record makes clever use of an Akon megahit, “Don’t Matter”. As always, Kehlani delivers clear and captivating vocals. The verses open feistily, explicitly lifting “Don’t Matter.” On the first verse, she sings: “You know they don’t wanna see us together / but it don’t matter, no, ‘cause I got you.” On the second verse, the tune doesn’t change dramatically: “Baby they don’t wanna see me be happy / ‘cause they ain’t happy, no.” She squeezes in a risqué gem at the end of the second verse: “I need you to hit me up, on my fake line / Hit that 6-9, yeah, that FaceTime.” Where would an urban contemporary song be without a sexual reference, sigh. The chorus is drenched in swagger, with timely f-bombs:

“One way or another
I’ma love you
Slidin’ under covers, undercover
They don’t wanna see it happen
But we say, fuck it…”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Kehlani keeps the hits coming with “Undercover.” “Undercover” suggests that SweetSexySavage is going to be a breath of fresh air.
