Grammy-nominated R&B artist Kehlani has kept a high profile throughout 2020. She’s released a number of singles, including “Toxic” and “Everybody Business”.  We all knew that she planned to release her proper sophomore album at some point.  Like many musicians, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t had an indefinite release date.  Now, the album is actually arriving much sooner than anticipated – not one of those ‘December 31, 2020’ pre-orders that grace a number of high-profile projects.  It Was Good Until It Wasn’t launches May 8, 2020, led by one final advance single, “F&MU.”

“We both know it’s never really goodbye / I swear it’s like we do this all the time, yeah / That shit be turnin’ me on, I cannot lie, lie…” “F&MU,” like many singles released by Kehlani, is characterized by its brevity.  The listeners get only two-and-a-quarter minutes of song.  Even so, that’s ample time for ‘Lani to be potent, particularly about a choice topic – love, sex, and relationships.  As the aforementioned lyrics suggests, the relationship has its fair share of issues, but ultimately, makeup sex atones.  If you didn’t figure out what the meaning of the title, well, it’s clear AF on the chorus:

“We fuck and make up like it’s Maybelline
We do petty things
Then mess up the sheets, yeah
You be runnin’ back once we let it go
I already know
Did it time before (Oh).”

Sure, it’s an oversimplification to suggest that good sex fixes things, but, in the case of “F&MU,” it’s quite entertaining to hear Kehlani make the assertion.  The second verse has its fair share of colorful lyrics, whether it’s the opening “Damn, it’s good, I might have to piss you off,” or “Why I gotta fuck you up to make you fuck like that.” Wow!

Final Thoughts

“F&MU” is short but definitely sweet.  Kehlani sounds awesome as always, and she has an interesting topic to work with – makeup sex.  Furthermore, Jahaan Sweet gives her sweet supporting production work, characterizing of urban music.
