R&B Singer Kehlani One-Ups Herself, Dropping the magnificent contemporary R&B single “Distraction” just one week after “CRZY.”
On July 15, R&B singer Kehlani released an excellent single, “CRZY.” After one week, she returns with yet another single, “Distraction.” “CRZY” is great but, “Distraction” is even better. Kehlani channeled her inner Rihanna on “CRZY.” On “Distraction,” she channels Brandy, at least on the chorus.
“Distraction” begins soundly. The intro borrows an excerpt from the chorus. From the beginning, an excellent slow, urban contemporary vibe is established. K delivers confident and sultry vocals, sounding stellar in her lower register. Once more, Kehlani resembles Brandy on the chorus, in regards to her tone. In addition to her own expertise, the vocal production further amplifies her instrument. Clearly, she soars, singing:
“Are you down to be a distraction baby But don’t distract me, let me ask you baby Do you, do you, do you wanna be A distraction baby.”
Another fine moment during the course of “Distraction” the bridge. K’s vocals are pure. The way she ascends out of the bridge to signal the chorus showcases incredible musicianship. Beyond production and vocals, the songwriting is noteworthy. The narrative is quite intriguing. Essentially, Kehlani doesn’t care if her “boyfriend” has money – she will “foot the bill.” She isn’t searching for anything serious, only a distraction. The said distraction seems to be the good ole “friends with benefits.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Distraction” is a solid urban contemporary record. Kehlani flaunts her beautiful vocal tone, showcasing her full potential to the world. Additionally, the production is excellent and the song soundly composed. “Distraction” > “CRZY.”
