In the 99^th edition of Midnight Heat (2024), we explore the naughty, sexy vibes behind, “Sugar is Sweet” by Keaton Savage.

“Your sugar’s always sweet / You’re still no good for me / But I keep you on repeat / Selfish little thing.” That is a meaningful and relatable statement. Perhaps the physical attributes are ‘on-point’ – the sex is giving – but that doesn’t mean the relationship is. Keaton Savage ‘eats’ on “Sugar is Sweet”, a sexy-sounding song that he characterizes as a song ‘about finally leaving a toxic relationship…’ Did Savage stay away from the sugar or nah? No, of course not, hence why he ‘proceeded to give it fiftyleven more chances lol.’ It seems silly, but it’s not far-fetched (“I’m tracing back the stale crumbs / I scattered on the ground”). Savage, Prince Will, Tim K, and Alana D penned this reflective, sexy-sounding cut. Tim K and Morris TV produced. The musical accompaniment is the sugar honey iced tea: colorful keys (Tim K), a robust bass line (Lucas/Heaven), and a slow but steady groove (Morris TV).

“Why’s it feel too sweet when it’s bad for you?” Because, the pleasure, at least in given moments, seems to atone for the toxicity. Many times, bomb sex and intimacy feel too irresistible to give up, even if you’re subjecting yourself to emotional abuse that shouldn’t be worth the D. Savage is self-aware – “I’ve fallen in too quickly / I need to be alone” – but even exiting any situation, including an uncomfortable one, can be arduous. Continuing in the chorus of this celestial, compound duple, R&B slow jam, Keaton musters up the courage to tell his ex, “I’ll leave you to your misery / I finally let you go / So, baby if you miss me / Then listen to this song.” Accompanied by a top-notch backdrop, Keaton Savage sounds amazing. His vocals are expressive, gorgeous, nuanced, and sensual. His ad-libs are incredible, and his vocal runs are impeccable. Upping the ante are the warm background vocals that support his authentic and vulnerable lead. Alana D understood the assignment as the vocal engineer ! Ultimately, “Sugar is Sweet” gives off those sensual vibes but rightfully exits a bad situation: “And I’m sorry but baby, this is how it ends.”
