Welcome to Lit Music That Lifts (LMTL), or Music Lifts ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿ‹ for short! Music Lifts seeks to highlight songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs arenโ€™t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better โ€“ be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 33rd  edition of Music Lifts ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿ‹ (2022), we highlight ๐ŸŽต โ€œRoarโ€ as performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Katy Perry.

Katy Perry, Prism [๐Ÿ“ท: Capitol]โ€œI used to bite my tongue and hold my breath / Scared to rock the boat and makes a mess,โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Katy Perry sings in the first verse of her gargantuan, uplifting hit, ๐ŸŽต โ€œRoarโ€, which graces her 2013 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Prism. Essentially, the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated pop artist didnโ€™t use her voice and kept the peace at her own cost. Thatโ€™s totally wrong! Thankfully, Perry changed her tune, realizing after she โ€œStood for nothingโ€ and โ€œfeel for everything,โ€ she needed to assert herself โ€“ find her roar if you will.  In the pre-chorus, sheโ€™s strong, unwilling to be muzzled anymore, instead flexing her muscles.  โ€œYou held me down, but I got up,โ€ she memorably sings, setting up one of the best choruses of the 2010s:

โ€œI got the eye of the tiger, a fighter

Dancing through the fire

โ€˜Cause I am a champion, and youโ€™re gonna hear me roar

Louder, louder than a lion

โ€˜Cause I am a champion, and youโ€™re gonna hear me roar!โ€

Woo! Over exuberant production, Katy Perry shuts down antifeminists and asserts her power to be what and who she wants to be.  She doesnโ€™t settle for others to make decisions for her, she is firmly in the driverโ€™s seat.  The days of being passive are done: โ€œI went from zero, to my own hero.โ€  Whether youโ€™re a girl or woman like Perry who has far too long let others (men) keep you down, or you a boy/man who lets others run all over you and take your power, itโ€™s time to find your ROAR and make sure that the whole world can hear it loud and proud.  This song NEVER grows old โ€“ itโ€™s among Perryโ€™s best.
