Katy Perry, Witness © CapitolKaty Perry falls short of her typical glory on her sensual, second single, “Bon Appétit.” Despite being assisted by Migos, “Bon Appétit” lacks relevance.

Katy Perry is attempting to make a comeback.  No, she hasn’t been out of the game for an unreasonable amount of time, but nearly four years is lengthy in pop music.  Her first single, “Chained to the Rhythm,” received positive reviews from us, though views differ depending upon who you ask.  What “Chained to the Rhythm” didn’t do for Perry is give her a massive hit.  It performed soundly, but not exceptionally like her best.  She returns with a second single, “Bon Appétit,” featuring Migos. Will “Bon Appétit” give her a massive hit? Um…

Katy Perry has had her share of moments where there is substance as well as those that eschew it.  “Roar” was catchy and commercially successful, but also delivered an uplifting message. “Bon Appétit” lacks substance, without question.  Basically, Perry uses food and eating to depict sexual appetite.  Yep, this innuendo has been used consistently by numerous artists.  In that regard, “Bon Appétit” doesn’t feel new or particularly relevant, particularly given the artist that Perry is. The chorus is okay, but not remarkable by any means.

“Cause I’m all that you want, boy
All that you can have, boy
Got me spread like a buffet
Bon appétit, baby
Appetite for seduction
Fresh out the oven
Melt in your mouth kind of lovin’
Bon appétit, baby.”

As far as the production, it’s okay, relying on dance to fuel the fire.  That said, even though there’s nothing to discredit it, the production doesn’t feel game changing either.  Still, the backdrop isn’t nearly as clumsy or tired as the lyrics.  In regards to the guest features from Migos, not even their Culture can elevate “Bon Appétit.” The main issue is that the tempo of the record is so quick, there’s little room for Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset to deliver noteworthy verses.

Final Thoughts

So, does “Bon Appétit” get a NO or a Yes? No. It’s forgettable, lacking the memorability of other Katy Perry singles.  Migos are hot right now, but even they fall flat here.  Perry was okay on “Chained to the Rhythm,” but she truly needs a big hit for her fourth album.  She’s yet to find it.
