Kamaiyah, Addicted to Ballin' [Photo Credit: Interscope]Up-and-coming West Coast rapper Kamaiyah has money on her mind on her new single, “Addicted to Ballin’.” She’s assisted by ScHoolboy Q.

“Mustard on the beat, hoe!” From the start, “Addicted to Ballin’” sounds West Coast to the core. Producer DJ Mustard certainly doesn’t disguise or suppress the melodic, G-Funk vibes characterizing “Addicted to Ballin.” This joint is funky to the nth degree.  Naturally, rising female rapper Kamaiyah uses the superb backdrop to her advantage, embracing all things melodic.  The hook is simple but absolutely infectious:

“Addicted to ballin’, I have to get my cash / The money is callin’, got bands, got bands, got bands / I’m addicted to ballin’… / I have to get my ends.”

As Madea once said, “I play about a lot of things, but I don’t play about my money.” That’s the case with Kamaiyah, period.  She goes onto the first verse, bragging about the bread.  This flex-fest includes reference to her Mercedes Benz, living by the beach, and more repetition about ‘chasing the money.’ Depth isn’t really part of the equation, but can you fault the girl for flexing?  ScHoolboy Q brings more rhythm, toughness, and less pitch on the second verse.  Where K is a bit more easygoing, Q is more explicit, typical of his style.  There’s nothing particularly mellow about lines like “Drunk as f**k now look at my dance / Where the bitches at? This my jam” or “Bitches start to love me too quick.”  Nonetheless, he ballin’.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Kamaiyah has a banger with “Addicted to Ballin’.”  She keeps it short and sweet and ultimately lacks substance, but it’s hard to deny the infectious nature of the record.  Again, don’t fault the girl for trying to get that money!
