In the 16th edition of COVERS (2024), Jxckson delivers a compelling rendition of “#1 Crush,” originally performed by Garbage.
Ah, it’s time to get cozy and totally cover up! In COVERS, we highlight a musician or band covering songs by another musician (likely a popular musician). COVERS focuses solely on the musician who covers, as opposed to the original/most famous performer. It is open to both established musicians and musicians who may not be as well-known. In the 16th edition of COVERS (2024), Jxckson delivers a compelling rendition of “#1 Crush”, originally performed by Garbage.
“I would die for you / I would kill for you / I would steal for you / I’d do time for you.” Ooh-wee! Sickening! Jxckson is sickening – in the most positive and lit way possible, that is! The pop artist never fails to impress with his engaging, ear-catching, and playful brand of music. How does the Austin, Texas standout toy with us this time? By darkly indulging into and dedicating himself to his “#1 Crush”, of course! If “#1 Crush” sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a cover of the 1996 Garbage song. Even though the source material isn’t original, Jxckson makes the song his own, much like he did on his 2023, t.A.T.u cover, “Null & Void”.
As is ALWAYS the case, Jxckson has a slick backdrop supporting him: a chilling, colorful palette of sounds (guitar, synths, beat). The production (GESS) is different from the original by Garbage, but also preserves its sanctity. Beyond the instrumental, the main attraction, Jxckson, impresses with his signature, playful vocal performance. He’s breathy and less melodic in the verses, digging into that indulgent, unsettling sound and vibe of the record (“I will twist the knife and bleed my aching heart / And tear it apart”). By the first chorus, Jxckson embraces the melody while still toying with us!
“See your face every place that I walk in
Hear your voice every time I am talking
You will believe in me
And I will never be ignored.”
Oh, snap! All told on “#1 Crush”, this talented artist gives us four-and-a-half-minutes of dazzling, dark rock.
