The musical outlook for Winter 2018 became a lot brighter when Justin Timberlake announced the release of his new album, Man of the Woods (February 2, 2018). Man of the Woods marks the first new JT effort since The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2, which arrived in September 2013. It is his fifth studio album. After unveiling “Filthy” in early January, Timberlake drops second single, “Supplies.”

“Supplies” features unique, modern, and sleek production work.  There are 808s and middle-eastern flavored synths. Justin Timberlake delivers quick-paced, rhythmic vocals, infused with hip-hop influence. The pre-chorus is rhythmic, chocked-full of swagger.

“‘Cause I’ll be the light when you can’t see / I’ll be the wood when you need heart / I’ll be the generator, turn me on when you need electricity / Some shit’s ‘bout to go down, I’ll be the one with the level head / The world could end now, baby, we’ll be living in The Walking Dead.”

The chorus is repetitive, simplistic, and devoid of depth.  Even so, it’s catchy as a four-letter word, expanded syllables and all.

“‘Cause I got supplie-ie-ies / Supplie-ie-ies / Cause I got supplie-ie-ies / Supplie-ie-ies”

“Supplies” has its fair share of gimmicky moments, such as the vocal harmonization on the second verse, but they play to Timberlake’s strengths ultimately. There is a unique change of pace on the bridge, which is a complete contrast to the verses, pre-choruses, and choruses (harmonically, key, etc.).

“Now I wanna know everything / Don’t leave a single detail out / I’ll get mine later, just fell out…”

Final Thoughts

Early on, the verdict is still out on what exactly to expect from Man of the Woods. Nonetheless, “Supplies” gives Justin Timberlake a unique, enjoyable single.  It’s imperfect, but interesting to say the least.
