Justin Bieber, "Anyone" [📷: Def Jam]Grammy-winning pop superstar Justin Bieber rings in 2021 with a brand-new single, “Anyone,” with respectable results.

Justin Bieber made a comeback in 2020.  That said, I wouldn’t characterize Changes as a slam dunk by any means, while “Yummy” earned the top spot on my 10 Worst Songs of 2020.  Still, Bieber returned, and vocally, he didn’t disappoint.  He commences 2021 with a brand-new single, 🎵 “Anyone.” How does “Anyone” stack up? Read on the find out, of course!

Like so many pop records of recent times, there is no shortage of songwriters.  Some of the most notable names gracing the credits are 🎼 Andrew Watt, 🎼 Jon Bellion, and of course, Bieber himself.  Watt and Bellion join 🎛️ The Monsters & Strangerz behind the boards, crafting this pop/rock record.  Justin certainly has no argument to stand on if he’s characterizing “Anyone” as R&B – it’s pop, baby!  Sound-wise, the best section is definitely the chorus, which is big, high-flying, and impactful.

Vocally, Bieber sounds solid, singing in his middle register on the verses, while also dipping into his upper register (chorus) and dropping some falsetto.   The sound is pleasant.  Thematically, he focuses on true love, specifically his wife, Hailey.  Honestly, the reflective chorus says it all:

“That you, are the only one I’ll ever love
Yeah, you, if it’s not you, it’s not anyone
Lookin’ back on my life, you’re the only good I’ve ever done
Yeah, you, if it’s not you, it’s not anyone.”

Final Thoughts 💭

So, how does “Anyone” stack up?  All in all, the results are respectable for Justin Bieber.  He sings well, and I’m definitely not going to knock him for loving his wife.  That said, the rub might be that this more mature version of Bieber just isn’t nearly as exciting as he once was.  No, I’m not saying JB ever had a personality I absolutely fell ‘head over heels’ for but he just doesn’t feel as dynamic and he’s still just 26.  I’m not seeking out unapologetic Bieber, but he’s still young and he’s beginning to become a bit boring as opposed to cutting edge.
