Julia Michaels, best known for her skill with the pen, also shines artistically on the short, sweet, and relatable single, “Love is Weird.”
“Closed off and exposed / Salty and I’m seared / Naked in my clothes, yeah.” Poetic, poetic, poetic! Known best for her skill with the pen, it’s easy to forget that 🎙 Julia Michaels is a captivating pop artist in her own right. Her single, 🎵 “Issues”, was definitely a big deal years ago. No, she hasn’t scored a knockout punch of that caliber since, but she continues to write for others as well as record her own songs. Her latest single, 🎵 “Love is Weird” is definitely worth checking out.
“Love is Weird” truly is short and sweet, running merely two-and-a-half minutes in duration. Despite being short, Julia Michaels makes this record well worth it. It commences with driving, rhythmic guitar. All in all, “Love is Weird” is more minimalist than maximalist, which works out just fine. Throughout the record, the audience is blessed with smooth, expressive, and beautiful vocals by Michaels. She never under- nor over- sings, providing awesome balance overall. As the title suggests, she reflects on the slippery experience that is love – the plight, if you will. This is incredibly relatable to the nth degree. On the second verse, as far as the production, we add a bit more oomph instrumentally. Still “Love is Weird” never loses its minimalist vibes. The best moment, of course, is the memorable chorus; I particularly love the melody here:
“Love is weird Don’t know how I wound up here Love is weird It shows up and disappears Love is strange for some It ranges from making love to tears Now we’re here, love is weird.”
Final Thoughts 💭
While love itself is indeed weird, there’s nothing weird about the song “Love is Weird.” Julia Michaels definitely makes the case she should have a higher profile as a singer in addition to her skill with the pen. Michaels keeps things simple in addition to brief, but there’s plenty to like about what she’s serving up. I’m onboard.
