Breakout melodic rapper Juice WRLD returns with another love-centric, potential hit single, “Hear Me Calling.”
“Treat your heart just like a blunt, of OG / Roll it up, I kissed it and I smoke you / Gots to be joking.” Juice WRLD continues to see his star ascend, period. If it hasn’t already been made crystal clear, “Lucid Dreams” elevated the young rapper’s profile immensely. Now, with a huge following, it’s time for Juice to continue to give us, well the ‘juice.’ He did pretty well for himself on “Robbery”, and the success continues on his lates single, “Hear Me Calling.”
Read into the aforementioned lyrical excerpt, and the premise of “Hear Me Calling” is a familiar for the young rapper – love, sex, etc. Initially, “Hear Me Calling” sounds a bit unsettled as he performs an excerpt from the eventual chorus (on the intro). It settles in in a timely fashion, with a tropical-tinged pop groove and of course the most memorable moment of the song, the chorus.
“Do you hear me calling? Do you hear me calling? Me no want no drama Not a fighter, a lover Do you hear me calling? Do you hear me calling? Me no want no drama I just want you, my darling.”
As always, Juice WRLD employs a pop-rap sensibility, keeping his rhymes melodic. Even though he’s melodic, he still incorporates plenty of rhythm. There are some nice musical moments within the production, including the beat, piano, and warm sounding synths. All in all, the sound of this record can be characterized as smooth.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, Juice WRLD has another hit on his hands with “Hear Me Calling.” This is an enjoyable record, but don’t go so far as to characterize it as ‘the second coming.’ There are numerous melodic rappers in the game these days, and while Juice WRLD has a knack for making hits, “Hear Me Calling” isn’t necessarily a brand-new concept. A respectable one, but not necessarily ‘innovative.’
