Scanning the Charts – Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot 100 dated 7/25/20 – Juice World and DaBaby still reigns atop the charts.
SCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is. I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye. To reiterate what I said last week (Juice World Earns Best Debut of 2020), this column won’t be extensive, but rather short and sweet, keeping that shit moving. This week, I picked out five notable observations from the Billboard 200, as well as five observations from the Billboard Hot 100, highlighting Juice WRLD, whose posthumous album earns the biggest debut of 2020. Check out my takeaways!
Billboard 200
💭 After earning a commanding no. 1 debut last week with his posthumous album, Legends Never Die, Juice WRLD remains no. 1 with a respectable 162,000 units per Keith Caulfield (Billboard).
💭 After securing his own massive debut two weeks ago, and only slipping to no. 2, Pop Smoke spends a second consecutive week in the runner-up slot. Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon was reissued as a deluxe edition, so, the late rapper received a boost. Also worth noting, Jhené Aiko released a deluxe edition of her album, Chilombo, which returns to the top 10 at no. 6.
💭 The Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks) returned with their first new studio album in 14 years with Gaslighter. While there’s nothing shabby about a no. 3 bow, the 84,000 units moved is underwhelming. Still, it has been 14 years, and things have changed in the game, a lot.
💭 The Chicks may lay claim to the only new album to debut in the top 10, but there are a pair of top 20 debuts. The first comes from Oliver Tree as Ugly is Beautiful launches at no. 14. The second arrives courtesy of Eslabon Armado with Vibras de Noche.
💭 Personally, I was surprised to see both Oliver Tree and Eslabon Armando outperform Ellie Goulding, who vastly underperforms with her long-awaited Brightest Blue. Unfortunately for the Grammy-nominated British pop artist, Brightest Blue opens at a tepid no. 29. Another disappointing debut arrives courtesy of KYLE, whose See You When I Am Famous!!!!!!!!!!!! Lands at no. 124… YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Billboard Hot 100
💭 DaBaby spends his seventh week at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his Blame it on Baby hit, “Rockstar,” featuring Roddy Ricch. Dominant no. 1 hit to say the least.
💭 DJ Khaled earns two additional top 10 hits – both debuts – with “Popstar” (no. 3) and “Greece” (no. 8). Notably, both singles feature Drake, giving the Canadian musician a record 39th and 40th top 10 hits. Regardless what you think of Drake’s music these days, those are beastly accomplishments.
💭 Chris Brown and Young Thug enter the top 10 with “Go Crazy,” which ascends a whopping 19 spots from no. 29 to no. 10.
💭 Naturally, Juice WRLD’s tracks from Legends Never Die lose some steam during the album’s second week. Still, “Come & Go,” a personal favorite, doesn’t exit the top-10 entirely, slipping from no. 2 to no. 9. It’s much worse for “Life’s a Mess,” which slides from no. 9 to no. 42… OUCH! (Note: “Come & Go” is the better song, btw)
💭 J. Cole ekes out a debut on the Billboard Hot 100 as “The Climb Back” launches modestly at no. 100.
