Jonas Brothers, XV- Single [Photo Credits: Jonas Brothers Recording / Republic]Following the infectious โ€œWhat a Man Gotta Do,โ€ Grammy-nominated pop collective Jonas Brothers return with single โ€œX,โ€ featuring Karol G.

Jonas Brothers already struck gold in 2020 with the release of their enthusiastic, infectious single, โ€œWhat a Man Gotta Doโ€ in January.  Now, the reinvigorate brother trio is back with two more new singles โ€“ โ€œXโ€ and โ€œFive More Minutesโ€ โ€“ with the latter being subject of this review.  โ€œXโ€ features Colombian reggaeton singer, Karol G.  The results are enjoyable, though โ€œXโ€ doesnโ€™t supplant โ€œWhat a Man Gotta Do.โ€

Beginning with the production and sound, โ€œXโ€ is as sleek as you might expect from a modern Jonas Brothers record. 2019 comeback Happiness Begins had no shortage of sleek backdrops, and the same can be said of โ€œX.โ€ Swedish producer extraordinaire Shellback โ€˜does his thingโ€™ as always, blending pop, Latin, and electronic successfully.  As far as songwriting, besides Shellback, the team includes performers Nick Jonas and Carolina โ€œKarol Gโ€ Giraldo, as well as pop royalty Ali Tamposi and Ryan Tedder.  With such a star-studded theme, excellence is the only option, right?

Well, overall, from a performance perspective, โ€œXโ€ is pleasant.  Vocally, Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas sound great sharing duties.  Nick handles the verses, while Joe handles the pre-chorus and chorus.  The best moments are sung in falsetto.  On the third verse, Karol G provides contrast, singing in Spanish, and fitting the overall vibe.  The songwriting isnโ€™t game changing, but itโ€™s definitely fun and quite catchy, particularly the chorus:

โ€œShe said, โ€˜Ooh-ooh-oohโ€™
Kiss me like your ex is in the room
Donโ€™t be afraid of something new
If you play it right, you can be that someone
Yeah, that someone who
Wonโ€™t leave me lonely tonight.โ€

Final Thoughts

All in all, โ€œXโ€ is another enjoyable offering from Jonas Brothers.  Nick, Joe, and Karol G all give nice performances.  As far as songwriting, the pre-chorus and chorus sections are catchy.  No, โ€œXโ€ wonโ€™t change your life, but it provides some fun to your listening rotation.
