Jonas Brothers, XV- Single [Photo Credits: Jonas Brothers Recording / Republic]Following the infectious “What a Man Gotta Do,” Grammy-nominated pop collective Jonas Brothers return with single “X,” featuring Karol G.

Jonas Brothers already struck gold in 2020 with the release of their enthusiastic, infectious single, “What a Man Gotta Do” in January.  Now, the reinvigorate brother trio is back with two more new singles – “X” and “Five More Minutes” – with the latter being subject of this review.  “X” features Colombian reggaeton singer, Karol G.  The results are enjoyable, though “X” doesn’t supplant “What a Man Gotta Do.”

Beginning with the production and sound, “X” is as sleek as you might expect from a modern Jonas Brothers record. 2019 comeback Happiness Begins had no shortage of sleek backdrops, and the same can be said of “X.” Swedish producer extraordinaire Shellback ‘does his thing’ as always, blending pop, Latin, and electronic successfully.  As far as songwriting, besides Shellback, the team includes performers Nick Jonas and Carolina “Karol G” Giraldo, as well as pop royalty Ali Tamposi and Ryan Tedder.  With such a star-studded theme, excellence is the only option, right?

Well, overall, from a performance perspective, “X” is pleasant.  Vocally, Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas sound great sharing duties.  Nick handles the verses, while Joe handles the pre-chorus and chorus.  The best moments are sung in falsetto.  On the third verse, Karol G provides contrast, singing in Spanish, and fitting the overall vibe.  The songwriting isn’t game changing, but it’s definitely fun and quite catchy, particularly the chorus:

“She said, ‘Ooh-ooh-ooh’
Kiss me like your ex is in the room
Don’t be afraid of something new
If you play it right, you can be that someone
Yeah, that someone who
Won’t leave me lonely tonight.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “X” is another enjoyable offering from Jonas Brothers.  Nick, Joe, and Karol G all give nice performances.  As far as songwriting, the pre-chorus and chorus sections are catchy.  No, “X” won’t change your life, but it provides some fun to your listening rotation.
