Jonas Brothers, "Waffle House" [📷: Brent Faulkner/The Musical Hype; Jonas Brothers Recording / Republic; OpenClipart-Vectors, PIRO via Pixabay]Jonas Brothers release “Waffle House,” a second somewhat polarizing single from their sixth studio album, The Album.

“No, don’t get stressed, it’s gon’ get figured out.” Okay, fair enough 🎙 Jonas Brothers, but where? “Oh, deep conversation at the Waffle House.” Um… okurrr.  🎵 “Waffle House”, the second single from 💿 The Album, continues to find 🎙 Nick, 🎙 Joe, and 🎙 Kevin Jonas clearly tweaking their sound.  Promo single, 🎵 “Wings” was meh by my estimations, yet, I sort of heard and understood the sound and vibe the collective was going for.  “Waffle House” is in a similar boat. Clearly, this record is tapping into a 1970s aesthetic – 🎙 Michael McDonald and 🎙 Bee Gees territory as Nick describes – BUT, like “Wings,” I have mixed feelings.

Jonas Brothers, The Album [📷: Jonas Brothers Recording / Republic]For one, why Waffle House? Why not IHOP? Just wondering! Anyways, Joe performs the first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus.  In the first verse, speaks to a level of competition between the brothers/band members. Nick echoes a similar sentiment in the second verse.  Despite this, the brothers “Know before the night ends,” “It’s gon’ get figured out.” Woo! Furthermore, in the intriguing chorus, “Headstrong father and a determined mother / Oh, that’s why some nights we tried to kill each other / But you know it’s always love.” The theme of the song is clear enough.  Vocally, Joe and Nick sound respectable.  As far as the songwriting, there are ten songwriters… As far as production, there are five producers.  Hmm, lots of cooks in the kitchen… I leave it at that.

Final Thoughts 💭

mehSo, just how appetizing is 🎵 “Waffle House”? I find it more appetizing than 🎵 “Wings” that preceded it.  Still, “Waffle House” feels like it’s missing something – perhaps a bit underwritten.  At under two-and-a-half minutes in duration, there isn’t much song. I get the direction that Jonas Brothers were going for as far as the sound, but, personally, I’m not 100% sold.  Worth listening to but not groundbreaking, all told.
