Jonas Brothers, Sucker [Photo Credit: Republic]Pop bro trio Jonas Brothers make an enjoyable and respectable comeback with their highly-anticipated, love-centric single, “Sucker.”

Jonas Brothers shocked the world – well some of the world – by announcing they’d be releasing a comeback single on Friday, March 1, 2019.  Instantly, “Sucker” definitely became the most highly-anticipated single released that day.  Sometimes, comebacks by former highly successful acts don’t live up to the hype.  In this case, the ‘short but sweet’ minor-key “Sucker” – all of three minutes in duration – is a win for Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Kevin Jonas.

“Sucker” features an infectious groove from the onset.  Adding to the allure is some sick falsetto by Nick Jonas on the first verse, which occurs in abrupt fashion (“We go together / Better than birds of a feather, you and me…”). As aforementioned, “Sucker” is set in a minor key, which gives the Jonas Brothers a bit more edge. Sure, there’s a still a sense of the tongue-n-cheek, which reminisces back to the Jo Bros of old, but it’s certainly not as schmaltzy as some of their past music.

The form of “Sucker” is straightforward, with verse, pre-chorus, chorus, twice, and then later, a repeat of the pre-chorus and chorus to close things out. Joe Jonas carries the weight on the pre-chorus, with portions sung with Nick:

“I’ve been dancing on top of cars and stumbling out of bars
I follow you through the dark, can’t get enough
You’re the medicine and the pain, the tattoo inside my brain
And, baby, you know it’s obvious.”

Even better than the pre-chorus is the memorable chorus.  Here, we hear the silky-smooth vocals of Nick, once more delivered in a well facilitated falsetto.  At times, Joe joins him.

“I’m a sucker for you, yeah
You say the word and I’ll go anywhere blindly
I’m a sucker for you, yeah
Any road you take, you know that you’ll find me
I’m a sucker for all the subliminal things
No one knows about you, about you
And you’re making the typical me break my typical rules
It’s true, I’m a sucker for you
I’m a sucker for you.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Sucker” is a fine comeback for Jonas Brothers.  Thematically, the song is all about love, which is an incredibly relatable topic.  Furthermore, the Jonas’ keep it straightforward and well executed.
