Rising English DJ Jonas Blue taps rising L.A.-based urban-pop/rap duo Jack & Jack for “Rise,” his second single of 2018.
28-year old English DJ and producer, Jonas Blue returns with “Rise,” his second single of 2018. “Rise” follows “Alien”, a single that paired Blue with rising actress/singer Sabrina Carpenter for quite the ‘extraterrestrial’ experience. Keeping it on earth this go-round, Blue enlists the services of rising L.A.-based, Nebraska-bred, urban-pop/rap duo, Jack & Jack, comprised of childhood friends Jack Johnson and Jack Gilinsky.
“We’re gonna ri-ri-ri-ri-rise ‘til we fall,” Jack & Jack sings optimistically on opening verse, backed by a fluty synth and finger snaps. Despite what the haters want the duo is not having it, continuing on the pre-chorus, “But we won’t change, change anything at all,” before echoing the aforementioned, key lyric. Naturally, the production is more robust beginning on the chorus, trading the snaps for a heavier beat. On the chorus, however, the snaps return, while Jack & Jack sing over piano accompaniment.
“They think we’re just drop-outs
Living at our mom’s house
Parents must be so proud
They know it all
No, they don’t speak our language
They say we’re too savage, yeah
No, no, we don’t give a… anymore.”
The post-chorus follows, incorporating some fresh, previously unheard synths and a relatively light drum groove. The second cycle of verse and pre-chorus find Jonas Blue establishing the production is more ‘confident,’ developed fashion, while the chorus and post-chorus feature the same sound. Piano-based sound for the chorus, with those attractive, rhythmic synths and light drum programming for the post-chorus.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Rise” is an enjoyable, pleasant number from Jonas Blue and Jack & Jack. Like “Alien” before it, it’s not game changing or transcendent, but definitely fun and well-rounded. From a production standpoint, Blue has some very nice moments, providing contrasts throughout the course of the single. Winning collaboration ultimately.
