Ahead of comeback album Mad Love., pop artist JoJo releases one final pre-release single, ballad “Music.” Prior to “Music.,” JoJo released three singles: “Fuck Apologies.”, “Mad Love.”, and “FAB”. “Music.” is more restrained, subtle compared to previous promo singles.

Clearly, JoJo channels her serious, sincerest side, something that could be said about the feisty “FAB.”   From the start, the authenticity of “Music.” is clear. The tone of the lyrics is introspective and reflective.  The chorus serves as a perfect lyrical example:

“Tell me who, who would I be without you?
No matter how much we lose
Every time I bet my life on you.”

There’s a blueness about “Music.”  The reason is because it pays ode to JoJo’s late father, clearly a massive influence and inspiration in her music career.  Naturally, it’s also about her career, but his influence is undeniable.  She offers plenty of hints she’s referencing her Dad throughout.  She clarifies it for the first time on the bridge:

“Went on the road to make my daddy proud
But I lost him and then I sang to the crowd
My only hope is that he’s looking down thinking
‘Oh my God, my daughter’s doing it now.’”

“Music.” is radiant, but definitely sad and somber in tone. It’s simply produced, a prudent choice on the part of producers.  The piano accompaniment won’t rouse listeners, but it’s hard to deny the beauty and meaningfulness of the record to JoJo.

Final Thoughts

Respectable is the best way to describe “Music.” JoJo delivers a moving ballad, particularly towards the end when she adds more oomph. The song is unlikely to earn JoJo traction on radio but should appeal to fans and those who love thoughtful stripped ballads.
