Joji returns with 🎵 “YUKON (INTERLUDE),” his second single of 2022 from his forthcoming album, SMITHEREENS.
“And my eyes get low in that all-white truck, I can barely see shit.” Sorry that that’s happening, 🎙 Joji. A GMC Yukon is a large, cumbersome, gas-guzzling SUV! What I’m not sorry about, however, is hearing another superb musical offering from him. With his days of Filthy Frank long behind, Joji has transformed himself into a gifted musician. After wowing with 🎵 “Glimpse of Us”, among the best songs of 2022, he returns with another gem, 🎵 “YUKON (INTERLUDE)”, as well as the announcement of a new studio album, 💿 SMITHEREENS. “YUKON (INTERLUDE)” has a hard act to follow, but it’s another strong addition to the Asian musician’s collection.
“YUKON (INTERLUDE)” is non-traditional, something more and more pop artists are exploring. That said, with interlude parenthesized, it makes sense that the song eschews a traditional form. Following the intro, Joji delivers one verse. Interestingly, that verse includes the excerpted line from the intro. Lyrically, the musician is ‘all over the place’ asserting, “And I overflow like mercury / Glowing with uncertainty / Circles at the Chevron / I might be forever gone.” So, he’s driving at circles at the gas station, seemingly in a compromised place mentally. Perhaps. Joji also asserts, “I was throwing stones at Hercules / throwing them so perfectly,” before revisiting “Circles at the Chevron / I can’t be forever young.”
Final Thoughts 💭
Yeah – the lyrics are all over the place on 🎵 “YUKON (INTERLUDE)”. This is intentional, making this interlude confusing and thought-provoking at the same time. Even so, I’d argue, a cerebral Joji is an intriguing Joji. “YUKON (INTERLUDE)” brings a different sort of intrigue compared to 🎵 “Glimpse of Us”, but it’s incredibly intriguing, nonetheless.
