Alternative R&B singer/songwriter Joji, part of the ‘rising’ 88rising roster, takes a “Test Drive” in advance of his highly-anticipated album, ‘BALLADS 1.’
88rising has had a terrific year. Specifically, 88rising alt-R&B artist Joji has experienced his fair share of success. No, he hasn’t quite had his breakthrough moment yet, but he’s certainly been pretty prolific, releasing the deluxe edition of In Tongues, and making several appearances on the 88rising compilation, Head in the Clouds. In preparation for his own new solo project, he’s released numerous singles, including the fourth advanced single, “Test Drive.”
“What do you want, babe? / I don’t like when you taunt me / You’ve been calling the wrong name / I say who do you want babe?” Naturally, “Test Drive” gives Joji another ballad, which is where his ‘bread is buttered.’ Even though the tempo is moderately slow, “Test Drive” is rhythmic, featuring alluring production work by RL Grime. Vocally, he sounds expressive, never daring to push his voice – he isn’t about those gospel histrionics or never-ending vocal runs after all. What he does offer is a distinct sound, and some colorful falsetto. Furthermore, he offers relatable subject matter – love, sex, and flames that have extinguished. The chorus is perfect evidence:
“She don’t wanna tell lies
She don’t wanna tell lies
She just wanna feel alive
She just wanted more time
I’m looking for a long ride
She just want a test drive
Now you go the west side
I’ll see you in the next life.”
Final Thoughts
Once again, Joji delivers an intriguing performance. “Test Drive” is another example of the successful marriage of urban contemporary and alternative music better known as alternative R&B. This record is well-produced, uniquely sung, and features relatable subject matter. All in all, it’s a winner.
