Grammy-winning pop artist John Mayer returns with a new single, “New Light,” produced by No I.D. and released via his own label, Snack Money.
John Mayer is 40 years old – that’s hard to believe! Mayer makes a surprising, early return with a new single, “New Light.” Interestingly, “New Light” doesn’t arrive via Columbia, but rather his own label, Snack Money. Also interesting is the fact that “New Light” is produced by No I.D.. A solid record, the main rub about “New Light” is that it doesn’t ‘break new ground’ or revolutionize in the least.
John Mayer is honest about where he stands on “New Light.” On the first verse, he asserts he’s “pushing 40 in the friend zone,” later adding, “Oh, you don’t think twice ‘bout me.” On the second verse, he paints a carefree picture where, “…We can go far from the end / And make a new world together baby.” The chorus sums up the situation, where essentially, Mayer just wants one chance to prove himself.
“But If you give me just one night
You’re gonna see me in a new light…”
Final Thoughts
All in all, Mayer sounds smooth as butter on “New Light.” Is this game changing? Absolutely not. “New Light” may feature a beautiful vocal tone, crisp guitars, and a mellow backdrop, but it’s not particularly exciting or ‘brand-new.’ At this point, Mayer sounds like a musician who has essentially seen his best days come and go. It’s not bad – it’s respectable through and through – but, “New Light” feels ever too light.
