Grammy-award winning pop/rock musician John Mayer delivers a simple, yet incredible consistent and thoughtful single with “I Guess I Just Feel Like.”

It’s no secret that once you get to a certain point in your career, things sort of cool off.  That is the case for Grammy-winning pop/rock musician John Mayer.  Mayer had an awesome run in the 00s, which continued on into 10s.  His last full-length album, The Search for Everything (2017) was another great project as well but didn’t receive the same commercial reception as some of the work in his heyday.  Hey, it happens.  Regardless, the 41-year old musician isn’t ‘crying over spilt milk.’ Instead, he’s releasing new music, specifically single “I Guess I Just Feel Like.”  

Fans of John Mayer should – rather WILL – eat up “I Guess I Just Feel Like.” This is a relatively simple, yet beautifully-penned and performed record, period. Mayer sounds polished vocally, without ever needing to over-sing or over-indulge.  Musically, his guitar skills remain firmly intact, as he drops some cool, calm, and collected solos.  The production is perfectly suited for Mayer, with its consistent driving rhythm (carried by rhythmic acoustic guitar), as well as a sense of lushness for the majority of the record.  Towards the end, “I Guess I Just Feel Like” becomes grittier but not TOO gritty, with a more aggressive, quicker-paced guitar solo, and more intense accompaniment.  Still, everything remains ‘in the pocket,’ and Mayer never loses his poise whatsoever.

Final Thoughts

John Mayer may be ‘old’ by the standards of the current music industry (he’s not really old, but he’s no SoundCloud kid either), but he proves ‘he’s still got it’ on “I Guess I Just Feel Like.” The songwriting is honest, the vocals are on-point, and his best attribute, his guitar playing remains top-notch to infinity.  So, all in all, Mayer’s ‘on’ on “I guess I Just Feel Like” with no questions asked.  Get it John!
