John Legend keeps soul alive and well on “Penthouse Floor,” the second single from his fifth studio album, Darkness and Light.
After compelling with promo single “Love Me Now,” John Legend returns with “Penthouse.” “Penthouse” is the second single released ahead of his fifth studio album, Darkness and Light (December 2, 2016). Two singles in, Darkness and Light appears to be another intriguing effort from the incredibly classy, soul musician.
A hard, soulful hip-hop beat initiates “Penthouse Floor.” The groove is definitely a selling point. Legend delivers clear vocals that are both soulful and accurate. In addition, his lead is amplified by the use of harmonized backing vocals throughout the course of the record. A sound harmonic progression provides a superb foundation.
“Penthouse Floor” retains a soulfulness – Legend is unafraid to keep R&B and soul alive. Listening to “Penthouse Floor,” it sounds as if Legend could care less if the neo-soul movement has been dead for years. Even though the song is R&B through and through, it doesn’t feel too old-school, even considering its retro-soul styling. Chance the Rapper adds youthfulness with his left-field guest rap.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, “Penthouse Floor” is John Legend through and through. Retaining the soulfulness, he’s maintained throughout his career, Legend does tweak the formula here, which makes this record truly captivating. This doesn’t supersede his classics, but is a welcome addition to his discography.
