“She’s so dope.” Apparently, comparing someone you love to drugs is a term of endearment.  It is in the case of the new 🎙 John Legend ‘joint’ (hehe), 🎵 “Dope”.  Legend taps rapper 🎙 JID for the assist on this breezy, poppy, contemporary soul cut.  Something of a different sound for John, the production is handled by 🎛 🎼✍ Ian Kirkpatrick and 🎛 🎼✍ Ryan Tedder. 🎼✍ Charlie Puth earns a writing credit alongside Legend, JID, Kirkpatrick, and Tedder.

John Legend, LEGEND [📷: John Legend Music, Inc. / UMG Recordings, Inc.]“Wanna be her dope fiend, she showed me what dope mean.” Woo! As always, John Legend sings well.  Has there ever been an instance where one of the most soulful vocalists of our time ‘crashed and burned’ in the vocal department? No, never.  Besides strong vocals, Legend is also able to sow off plenty of personality with those lyrics bearing swagger and, a drug reference here and there: “She lightning, straight to the vein.” The lyrics aren’t deep – just straight to the point.  JID has more lyrics than the main attraction, and is the reason this joint gets the parental advisory treatment: “And now I fiend for foreplay, sexual relation / She know the pussy bomb, C4, get to the station.” While it is pussy that gets that sticker, perhaps JID’s more intriguing lyric follows:

“On the intercom, tell everybody I’m somewhere naked

Sweaty, stankin’, shakin’, take me in the outpatient

Because the way I’m trippin’ out is kinda outrageous

I need it now, baby.”

We assume he needs that dope, and since John Legend has made it crystal clear ‘she’ is dope, we assume, JID needs her.

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageSo, does 🏆 Academy/Grammy-award winner John Legend score a gem with “Dope”? Um, well, it’s enjoyable if not nearly as ‘dope’ as his classics.  Again, Legend sings well, and infuses personality into his performance, as does JID.  It’s respectable; worth a listen.
