John Legend, A Good Night © ColumbiaMulti award-winning R&B artist John Legend shines once more on his new pop-soul oriented single, “A Good Night,” produced by highly-demanded producer, BloodPop®.

One of R&B’s most soulful voices is back! That would be John Legend, who seems to bring an element of church and black gospel to every song he sings.  Honestly, who sounds like this talented Academy-award/Grammy-award winning pianist/singer? No one.  Interestingly, Legend is paired with BloodPop® (who continues to rise in popularity) on his first official single post-Darkness and Light, “A Good Night.”

From the start, the groove is easy-going and feel-good.  It’s soulful, but clearly, John Legend is joining ‘the times’ – rather a more contemporary sound – on “A Good Night.”  It’s still R&B mind you, but it’s pop enough to earn airplay and garner streams.  While it’s not shocking that Legend has some ‘groove’ under him, particularly in the hands of BloodPop®, what is shocking is that he drops the f-bomb in the first line of the song.  Yes, Darkness and Light had its share of profanity, but still!

“I had no intention I would get f**ked up tonight

When I looked in your eyes and they went through me like a knife…”

Following a confident, verse, the pre-chorus adds syncopated electric piano, further inciting head-nodding. Throw in the infectious, fun nature of the lyrics, and “it’s all good.”  Here’s the kicker – this is still relatively classy, grown-folks R&B.  Typically, the style isn’t associated with funor infectiousness.  Legend and BloodPop® pull it off.  The chorus is the centerpiece:

“But everything’s gonna be alright

I think I just met my wife

I know it’s gonna be a good night

I think I just met my wife.”

Final Thoughts

Often the question is asked, how does the R&B artist continue to be successful with the odds stacked against him? You do what John Legend does on “A Good Night.” Legend has evolved from neo-soul torchbearer to soulful pop star, and it totally works. Going in, I had doubts how a John Legend/BloodPop® pairing might work.  After hearing it, they make a fine tandem.
