Rock singer/songwriter Joey Ariemma continues to show great potential on “Miss You Now,” his second single released in 2020.
Believe it or not, rock does still exist. Joey Ariemma is a prime example of a musician who isn’t afraid to embrace the genre. You could categorize his second single of 2020, “Miss You Now” falls in that ‘in-between’ characterization of pop/rock. Honestly, the pop/rock sound is a sound I enjoy, but simply isn’t as popular as it once was. No, guitars haven’t completely faded but, in an age, where programming is huge, even in rock, it doesn’t hurt to hear distorted guitars as opposed to synths. This sound suits Joey well, period.
A well-rounded vocalist, Ariemma sings the verses of “Miss You Now” in his middle register. He never gets ‘too high’ nor does he underwhelm. There’s balance, which is always a pro. He brings more energy to the chorus, upping the ante with greater expression. Naturally, the chorus is a big-time selling point.
“Hearts are bringing gravity to ground But to me there’s solace in the sound I miss you now In between the sacred and profane We hold on but Nature has its way Yeah, I miss you now Am I missing out? I need you, need you now Am I missing out?”
How about some other notes regarding “Miss You Now?” The form is pretty straightforward, hence, quite accessible. There are no major surprises, but none are necessary either. Worth noting, there’s a nice ‘post-chorus’ that arrives between the second chorus and bridge section that highlights the titular lyric. Though surprises are minimal, on the bridge, I didn’t expect Ariemma to return to his lower register – he definitely tricked my ears. The effect makes sense, and also urges the listener listen closely. I do wonder, what if he’d went for the ‘power move’ and ascended higher instead? Regardless, it’s successful and certainly sound.
Final Thoughts
Like his previous song, “Twenty Something Wreck,” there is a plenty to like about “Miss You Now,” and even more to like about Joey Ariemma. Perhaps this “Miss You Now” won’t cause you to be absolutely ‘shook,’ but you’ll definitely dig those pop/rock vibes that more artists should dive into. All in all, “Miss You Now” is enjoyable and continues to show the potential of Mr. Ariemma.
