Joaicon, emotional fuqboi (EP) [📷: IconzRecordz]Dominican pop artist Joaicon shines on his brief but compelling debut EP, memorably titled, emotional fuqboi

The moment has finally arrived! What moment, you ask? Dominican Republican musician 🎙 Joaicon (Joan Moreta) has released his debut EP! You always remember your first of just about anything, and Moreta ensures no one will forget this project, at least, regarding its title: 💿 emotional fuqboi. Ooh-wee, Joan! Not only is the title spicy, but so is the EP itself.  All four songs from emotional fuqboi are worth indulging in – well-seasoned, and showing the potential of this young, talented musician.  Let’s dive into this emotional fuqboi, shall we?

“my death”

Joaicon, My Death [📷: IconzRecordz]“I’m losing my breath, I’m not so far from my death.” The good news is, Joaicon is alive, even if he isn’t well on 🤩 🎵 “my death”, the opener from emotional fuqboi. What has got Moreta dying on this record penned alongside Ruddy Quezada and produced superbly by Jossuell Jimenez? LOVE. After commencing with clever sound effects, the minor key sets the morbidity. The accompanying instrumental is dark, but, from a musical perspective, it’s ear-catching – heavenly! The centerpiece is none other than Joaicon himself! His tone is incredibly beautiful and expressive, despite pain and loss of life.  Rightfully, Moreta lets this guy know he wasn’t shit! The lies are NOT giving in the least: “Said you want me to stay but you treat me like shit / Like I’m worthless and I have no shame.”  As Moreta has evolved, and exited from this toxicity, he tells his shitty ex, “I hope you remember me and all the things we’ve done.” Although brief, running just two minutes in duration, 🎵 “my death” is potent.

“boyfriend”

Joaicon, “boyfriend” [📷: IconzRecordz]“Can you hold me? / Because I’m fucking sick and tired of being lonely.” Relatable, relatable, relatable!  Joaicon continues, “Tonight (yeah tonight) (tonight is the night) / You can press all my buttons.” Clearly, Joan desires a 🤩 🎵 “boyfriend”.  Not just any, mind you, but specifically, a guy who is already taken… Even so, he sings, “I don’t care if you have a boyfriend / Hold me (hold me tight) (so fucking tight) / Let me be your only one.” Moreta isn’t pushing for a polyamory – he wants monogamy!  Basically, he’s asking the hottie to leave his boyfriend and become his! WOO! He sounds chill yet commanding throughout the song. He’s silky smooth, exhibiting ample swagger, particularly when he drops some Spanish (“Hola bebé, quiero tocar tu piel / Vente conmigo ahora y volvemo’ al amanecer er”).  Is he desperate? Maybe, but love (and lust) makes you do crazy things.  Don’t knock the man because, he constructs a lit fantasy we all envy: “We can lose ourselves in this bed / My lips kissing your skin / My hands grabbing your hips / Oh, baby, you’ll be mine.” 🎵 “Boyfriend” marks a second consecutive winner from emotional fuqboi.

“nevermind”

Joaicon, emotional fuqboi (EP) [📷: IconzRecordz]“Nevermind / Nevermind / Nevermind / Never, ever, ever.” WOO! 🎵 “Nevermind” marks the sole newbie from emotional fuqboi (the other three songs were released in advance). Once again, Joaicon doesn’t disappoint, showing incredible potential.  “Nevermind” runs a respectable three-and-a-half minutes in duration, giving the artist plenty of time to deliver the goods.  The sound is idiomatic of modern pop and R&B, with hip-hop infused production – warm pads, stuttering drums, etc.  Melodically, there are some terrific moments, with the best coming during the tuneful chorus, the song’s very best moment. Joaicon sings well throughout, never forcing things. Also, like 🎵 “boyfriend”, Moreta throws some Spanish lyrics in the mix – always a win! As always, matters of the heart play a sizable role!

“self-centered”

Joaicon, self-centered [📷: IconzRecordz]“I can be me again.” That is a statement right there – a 🎵 “self-centered” statement! There’s more where that came from courtesy of Joaicon: “I wanna go out and / Yeah, I wanna be free / Free.” Clearly, no more shit will be taken by Joan! Regarding “self-centered,” he wrote on IG, “I hope you have fun with this song, I want to see y’all having fun with it and showing the middle finger to any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable.” There is plenty to ️ about the closer from emotional fuqboi. Before he ever sings a note, the listener is blessed with a driving bass line and an electrifying groove. Furthermore, there is punk energy established – rock TF on! Early on, Moreta serves up honest vocals: “These lonely nights got me thinking / That we should take different ways / I’m tired of asking you for attention / I’m so sick of this toxic situation.” Even though he’s transparent AF, his vocals are also fun and playful, by design.  Embracing himself, Joaicon makes it clear, “Go talk about me with ur friends /… Soon you’ll find out I’m the best u ever had.” Throwing daggers, isn’t he? Iconic, as he describes on IG, the middle fingers are up to the skies: “When you try to come back / It’ll be too late / I’ll be in the streets / Kissing 😘 someone else.”  Joaicon is crystal clear from the start of 🎵 “self-centered” ‘what it is’ and he is living it up for himself! A great F🤬CK YOU bop, post-breakup that anyone can get behind.

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji Image12 minutes.  That’s how much music Joaicon gives us.  It’s not much regarding duration, but, to reiterate, these four songs from emotional fuqboi are worth indulging in. These tunes are well-seasoned, and show the potential of this young, talented musician. Don’t sleep on Joaicon!
