It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 46th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2025), we dive into “The Middle”, the one-hit wonder by Jimmy Eat World.

“It just takes some time / Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride.”
True dat, Jimmy Eat World. The Arizona rock band struck gold with the song at hand, “The Middle”. “The Middle” is the third track from the band’s fourth album, Bleed American, released in 2001. Notably, this was the only top 40 hit for the band, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.  Even though it’s their only pop breakthrough, it’s an epic, unforgettable one! Band members Jim Adkins (lead vocals, lead guitar, b. 1975), Tom Linton (guitar), Rick Burch (bass), and Zach Lind (drums) penned “The Middle.” Jimmy Eat World and Mark Trombino produced it.

“The Middle” begins with assertive, driving, rhythmic guitar. The tone is set superbly! Frontman Jim Adkins brings the heat with his clear and expressive vocals.  He represents the alt/emo/pop-punk sound of the 2000s marvelously. The melodies are tuneful from the get-go, throughout the verse and the chorus. “Hey, don’t write yourself off yet,” he sings in the first verse, and adds, “And don’t you worry what they tell themselves when you’re away.” “Live right now, yeah, just be yourself,” he sings prudently in the second verse, and concludes, “It doesn’t matter if it’s good enough (Good enough) for someone else.” The chorus, excerpted earlier, is the crème de la crème of “The Middle.” He continues, “Everything, everything will be just fine / Everything, everything will be alright, all right.” Beyond the first two verses and choruses, there is a captivating guitar solo. I love the contrast and spice provided in the third verse with tasteful rhythmic synth. The lyricism remains tried and true.  Two decades-plus later, “The Middle” remains a surefire, unforgettable vibe.
