Jessmin, Hyperfixated → EP Review

[otw_shortcode_dropcap label=”J” size=”large” border_color_class=”otw-no-border-color” shadow=”shadow” square=”square”]essmin put ‘Hyperfixated’ out on 2 October: five songs, four of them singles she’s released over the past while, and one brand new title track that I think is her best yet. It’s about a crush that gets out of hand in the nicest way. She notices a guy, imagines every chat the two of them could possibly have, plays them back on a loop, and keeps her distance the whole time. Pop has always been brilliant at turning tiny feelings into huge songs, and she gets that completely. The verses race, full of nervous energy, and the chorus is pure joy; I was singing it back before the song had even finished.

The video is so much fun. It all happens in one night out at a bar, and you watch her get more and more swept up in this guy as the evening rolls on. It’s sweet, a bit cheeky, and really easy to watch twice.

The guitars come from the Avril Lavigne and Hilary Duff albums she loved growing up, so there’s that bright, loud pop punk energy, but she adds shiny synths inspired by Charli XCX and Oklou. Together it feels fresh and fun, the kind of thing you’d happily hear on the radio and then again at a party.

The title track began at a writing day AT Publishing organised with Alexander Haak and Stijn van Rijsbergen, and they had a demo done by the end of it. Nick Jongejan, who has produced her music for years, helped her finish it, and Jessmin was there for every step, mix included. It sounds polished and confident, exactly like the artist she wants to be.
