4 out of 5 stars

Jessie Reyez, Body Count © FMLYChocked-full of attitude, Jessie Reyez exhibits mad attitude on fierce single “Body Count,” asserting her independence as a woman who doesn’t need a man.

Jessie Reyez has one of the most distinctive singing voices in the music industry.  Overstatement? Definitely not.  The Colombian-Canadian musician may be a rising star as opposed to a superstar as of yet, but she’s already proving she’s ‘one of a kind.’ She shines on her latest single, “Body Count.”

Besides a cutting-edge, distinct set of pipes from Jessie Reyez, it’s her attitude that makes “Body Count” a gem.  She’s unapologetic and unafraid to speak her mind, snarling on the first verse:

“You don’t gotta tell me ‘bout your body count…

I dodge dick on the daily, yeah

I know it’s funny, but it’s true

And I bought this Mercedes all by myself

Got the papers to prove.”

Clearly, Reyez is an independent woman who doesn’t need a man to do anything for her.  She confirms this on the memorable chorus (“We don’t need no one, you, tryna take our freedom, yo…”).  She goes on to sing on the post-chorus, “We gon’ love who we wanna love…”  On the second verse, she continues to be bold, arguably more so than the first, playing on words.

“Baby, I ain’t gonna post you on my page

‘Cause odds are that goodbyes are cumming soon

So, maybe you should put a rubber on your heart before it breaks…

But some nights I would rather make love to myself

Singing to my own damn tune.”

Wow! Reyez ends up closing out “Body Count” with an outro, asserting about her wrong-doing ex, “But I don’t hold any anger, I just swerve.”

Final Thoughts

Jesse Reyez keeps getting better and better, and more people should be taking notice.  “Body Count” is a brilliant single that many women should be able to relate to.  Sure, I’m a dude writing this review, but I applaud Reyez’s independence and sheer toughness.  Most of all, I admire her voice.
