3.5 out of 5 stars

Jessie Saint John, Fake It © We Are: The GuardPop songwriter Jesse Saint John takes the reins as a solo artist on the enjoyable, 80s-infused “Fake It,” just his second career solo single.

Who is Jesse Saint John? According to Billboard, the songwriter “has collaborated with the likes of Britney Spears, Camila Cabello, Sia, and Charli XCX. That’s some major star power right there. According to Out, referencing his debut single, “Move”, the “queer singer-songwriter… – that blonde L.A. wild child with a taste for bombast and badassery – has finally emerged with some music of his own.” Basically, it is Saint John’s time to shine as a solo artist – be his own man.  “Fake It” marks only his second single as a solo artist, following the aforementioned “Move,” which arrived earlier in 2018.  For only his second solo single, “Fake It” is pretty awesome.

“Fake It” commences enigmatically, before the 80s are reborn right before our eyes.  That equates to rhythmic synths, lush pads, and even some of the signature boxy drum programming, sigh.  Even though 80s pop and new wave has a big influence, there are also some modern touches (808s), keeping things fresh. Overall, the sound is fitting for Saint John, who delivers relatively cool vocals, packing more punch on the chorus.  He never needs to over-sing or push too much – so much of “Fake It” is about vibe, and he nails and owns that without question.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Jesse Saint John shines on “Fake It” – there is nothing fake about what he’s doing musically.  Saint John has a solid, enjoyable voice, but arguably, it’s the vibe– the 80s aesthetic and ambience – that propels “Fake It.”
