Welcome to Lit Music That Lifts (LMTL), or Music Lifts 🎶 🏋 for short! Music Lifts seeks to highlight songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 39th edition of Music Lifts 🎶 🏋 (2022), we highlight 🎵 “You Pulled Me Through” as performed by 🎙 Jennifer Hudson.

Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Hudson [📷: RCA / Jive]“When I was drowning / When I was so confused / You, you, you pulled me through.”  After being “in the darkness” and “out in the cold,” 🎙 Jennifer Hudson was pulled through by Him – her savior! 🎵 “You’ll Pulled Me Through” served as a standout from her 🏆 Grammy-winning debut album, 💿 Jennifer Hudson, which was released in 2008.  In the chorus, the centerpiece of this 🎼 ✍ Diane Warren-penned record, Hudson continues singing, “I was in the shadows / Lost, nothing left to lose / You, you, you pulled me through.”

So, the question is, who is Hudson’s savior in “You Pulled Me Through?” Is she referencing God or is she referencing a significant other?  While the God perspective seems possible, particularly in the second verse when she sings, “You gave my faith back” and “You gave my life back,” likely, she seems to be talking about an awesome man.  He’s uplifted her – restored her faith in love and living life to the fullest.  “Out of the dark into your arms,” she sings in the bridge, “Into the light / Your love saved my life.” Still, doesn’t it seem that Warren intended this song to have multiple interpretations, particularly since it’s never specific about whom it’s addressed to? Regardless, this person has restored and saved Hudson – hallelujah!
