On again, Seattle, Washington is in the house! That’s where self-produced, up-and-coming hip-hop artist Conner Bloyd, aka Jaymes Crux hails from.  The 25-year old musician brings a distinct sound to the rap game, including using voices as instrumental elements, and vocal chopping. Here at The Musical Hype, we were first privy to Crux via his fine debut single, “Born to Die”, assisted by Portland band LøveJøy.  This go-round, we’re invited into a “Dangerous Game,” with Ethan Dufault joining for the momentous ride.

“Dangerous Game” commences with lush, warm production work.  The pads, the synths – radiant to the nth degree. Even though there’s radiance and warmth, the ‘danger’ lies in the minor key, giving the record a darker quality.  Following a percussion-less intro, the beat kicks in, instantly making “Dangerous Game” more electrifying.  Jaymes Crux enters into the picture, continuing to flaunt his compelling, easygoing flow that he exhibited on “Born to Die.” This time, however, he has bit more bite, which is a selling point.

Why does Crux exhibit extra oomph? Clearly, it’s the ‘dangerous game.’ Of “Dangerous Game,” Bloyd asserts, “It’s about navigating the complicated emotions of love and lust while still being relatively young.” Listening throughout the five-minute record, he superbly conveys his concept.  He gets a fine assist from Dufault, who handles the chorus and provides additional contrast.  Notably, the backdrop changes during the bridge, providing another worthwhile contrast.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Jaymes Crux delivers on “Dangerous Game.”  His flow remains compelling, while his rhymes pack additional punch.  The production work shines, blending beauty as well as darkness – dangerousness.  Furthermore, Ethan Dufault is pleasant and sound on chorus. More good vibes.
