Jay Rock brings the heat on his cocky, confident, and hard-nosed new single, “Win.” “Win” exemplifies banger-status, not to mention being a total flex-fest.
Jay Rock has had a fantastic year in 2018. Why? One song my friends – one song! That one gem that has elevated his profile is “King’s Dead”, arguably the best song on Black Panther the Album Music From and Inspired by. No, Jay didn’t do it all on his own – he’s assisted by Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake – but it’s a big musical statement from the rapper. Why not celebrate with a “Win”?
Part of the “Win” for Jay Rock is the sound – the production of the record. The listener is spoiled with a spirited, minor-key brass loop, as well as hard-nosed, trap drums. The backdrop is perfect fuel for Jay’s flex-fest, beginning with a confident hook.
“Get out the way, get out the way, get out the way, yeah
Get out the way, get the f*ck up out my way, yeah
You either with me or against me, ho
You either with me or…
These n***as ain’t shit, win, win, win, win
Stop chasin’ that b*tch, win, win, win, win.”
The hook is cliché, but definitely perfect for turning up. The same can be said of Jay Rock’s verses, which are nothing ‘brand-new,’ but worthwhile. Few of us really care about his “Forearm tattoos, that’s squad,” right? Right – tattoos are abundant in the world. Also, the diamond talk is ‘been there, done that’ – his are better than yours after all:
“And your diamonds like tap water
That shit way too foggy
These VVSs way awesome…”
He does have clever moments (or semi-clever moments) such as “F*ck n***as don’t stay outside when I play outside / I put beats on, like I’m Dre outside.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, Jay Rock has every reason to celebrate his “Win.” It’s an enjoyable, but tough, well-produced, hard-flexing banger. Nothing Jay says is new, but he executes it all soundly.
