“Sweet and sour there you go / Always putting on a show / But I always love the taste / So I can’t leave you alone.” That, my friends, is an excerpt from the chorus of the bright, enthusiastic pop/rap record, “Sweet N Sour.” New Zealand musician Jawsh 685 is credited as the lead artist (he produces), though it is the ‘love master’, Lauv, who gets the honors of performing the infectious chorus.  Furthermore, joining Jawsh and Lauv is none other than ubiquitous, freaky rapper extraordinaire, Tyga.  Amazingly, somehow, “Sweet N Sour” manages to be clean as opposed to explicit!

Since Jawsh 685 is the lead artist and handles production, it is only fair to highlight him first.  As aforementioned, the sound is bright, enthusiastic, and exuberant – definitely rocks that major key.  He sets up both guest artist with a great backdrop, one that works in both the pop world (Lauv) and the hip-hop world (Tyga).  Does his work behind boards change any lives in the process? Nah, but considering Jawsh is a teenager – not even 18 yet – the kid does his thing.

Beyond Jawsh, the reins mostly belong to Lauv who is true to self.  At times, I’d like a bit more punch from the singer, as well as more annunciation, but all in all, it’s sound.  Worth noting, the sexual innuendo is lit: “Monday, lick me like a lollipop / Tuesday, is she loving me or not? / Wednesday, now she climbing back on top / I know she’s bad for me but I don’t ever wanna stop.” Yeah, I imagine you don’t Lauv – geez! Of course, more amazingly, Tyga manages to come out oof “Sweet N Sour” without uttering a single swear word – mark it down! Still, he ‘gets it in’ just tastefully.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Sweet N Sour” is an enjoyable, late summer record from Jawsh 685.  He shines on the production without a question.  The collaboration with Lauv and Tyga is also successful, even if it isn’t earth shattering or game changing. Worth spinning!
