“I don’t just want anybody,” Jason Mraz sings in the first verse of “Pancakes & Butter”, a highlight from his 2023 album, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride.  The Grammy-winning musician is eyeing that special somebody – his person by the sound of it: “I want you to lie beside me / I’ll wait for you to come.” I know what your dirty mind is thinking – come is intended as double entendre. In the case of this dedicated, love-driven song, the context seems to be waiting for that special person, not the result of, well, you know… Mraz penned this wonderful song alongside Chaska Potter, Mai Sunshine Bloomfield, Molly Miller, Mona Tavakoli, and Becky Gebhardt. Mraz sounds utterly sublime from the start to finish of “Pancakes & Butter.” Believe it or not, the “Geek in the Pink” is now 46 years old ! Truly age ain’t nothing but a number because Mraz sounds as youthful as he always did – his voice is so pure. In the pre-chorus, Mraz offers the utmost dedication.  “If you need fire, I am your match / If you got an itch, I’ll be your scratch / Whatever you want, I want for you.” Aww – the feels, the feels, the feels! He offers similar sentiments in the bridge, which is a variation of the pre-chorus (form labels are interchangeable). Of course, where we get those pancakes and butter is the most glorious section of the song – the chorus!

Sometimes, that Midnight Heat just hits different! There’s no explicit sex, but clearly, that romance is lit! This is definitely a sex song in the sense that it’s made for, well, matters of the bedroom! “Pancakes & Butter” – so delish!
