Eclectic urban contemporary artist Janelle Monáe returns with “I Like That,” the fourth advance single from her third full-length album, ‘Dirty Computer.’
“I’m always left of center and that’s right where I belong / I’m the random minor note you hear in a major song.” Poetic! As previously asserted, dull and Janelle Monáe simplydon’t belong in the same sentence. Since the beginning of her career, Monaé has always been a captivating and truly compelling artist. Her eclecticism seems to know no bounds, which is awesome. After dropping the boldest song of her career, “PYNK”, she returns with the fourth advanced single, “I Like That,” from her highly-anticipated third full-length album, Dirty Computer.
Janelle Monáe characterizes herself throughout the course of “I Like That.” On the verses, she paints a picture of eclecticism and nonconformity. On the second verse, she asserts, “Take a different type of girl to keep the whole world afloat.” There’s dualism about the particular lyric. In one token, Monáe is revealing more about her sexuality to the world. In another token, she simply seems to be asserting she’s a special, truly unique person who can’t be pigeonholed. On the pre-chorus, she continues this characterization, while she snarls on the chorus:
“And I like that
I don’t really give a f*ck if I was just the only one
Who likes that
I never like to follow, follow around, the chase is on.”
Final Thoughts
Once again, Janelle Monáe is at her best on “I Like That.” This well-produced, soulful joint finds her being both honest and unapologetic about who she is. Whether or not you agree with the person she describes or how she lives her life, what is relatable is how she embraces who she is, f-bombs and all. Based upon the four singles issued in advance of Dirty Computer, it’s clear that Monáe will be a force to be reckoned with on her third album.
