Following the release of singles “Wild Love” and “Pink Lemonade,” Grammy-nominated English singer-songwriter James Bay releases “Us,” the third single from his sophomore album, Electric Light.’
James Bay started off 2018 in polarizing fashion. The return of the Grammy-nominated English singer-songwriter is awesome, any way you shake it, particularly the announcement of his sophomore album, Electric Light. Promo single “Wild Love” received mixed reviews, signaling a change of direction. Some liked it, others, like myself, were skeptical. Bay made up for my skepticism on his second single, “Pink Lemonade.” Although a bit overwrought, it was clearer what direction Electric Lightmight be headed in. His third promo single, “Us,” might be his best.
First and arguably foremost, the vibe of “Us” is incredible. James Bay opts for a more soulful sound, created by piano, organ, and background vocals. Even with the vintage cues in play, “Us” manages to incorporate some of the moderntouches of “Wild Love” in more moderation here. Bay does a fantastic job of showing vocal poise early-on, specifically the first verse.
“Sometimes I’m beaten
Sometimes I’m broke
‘Cause sometimes this is nothing but smoke…”
He serves up excellent falsetto on the first iteration of the chorus. Falsetto changes to full-voice on the second iteration.
“Tell me how to be in this world
Tell me how to breathe in and feel no hurt
Tell me how ‘cause I believe in something
I believe in us.”
Final Thoughts
Some other notes. The pacing is fantastic on “Us.” It starts off relatively slow, then, it picks up steam. The bridge section is powerful – very dynamic and chocked-full of energy. While Bay pulls back initially on the final chorus, he embraces the power once more, in all its glory. All in all, a polarizing start has transitioned into pure excitement advancing Electric Light.
