According to young rapper/actor Jaden Smith, he’s a “GHOST” on his brief, confident new single, produced by Christian Rich, FNZ, and OmArr.
Jaden Smith, the son of Academy Award-nominated actor and Grammy-winning rapper Will Smith, is back with a new single. The 19-year old actor/rapper released his full-length debut album, SYRE, relatively quietly in 2017. On his latest single “Ghost,” the younger Smith keeps it short and sweet, like to the tune of just north of two minutes. Notably, “Ghost” marks his first new single of 2018, aside from remixes of “Icon” from SYRE. He’s assisted by Christian Rich.
“I just ran hunnid yard dash / You spend too much cash / Screw your Goyard bags / I know that you wouldn’t last.” From the start, the sound of “Ghost” is dark and malicious. Clearly, it’s a banger, featuring minimalistic production, anchored by trap drums and some synths. Been there, done that. In regards to his flow, Jaden Smith is low-energy throughout the course of the record. His bars aren’t low-energy mind you, but his delivery is deadpan – monotone.
Where does the ghost come into play on “Ghost?” There’s a couple of instances. One is on the chorus where Smith raps, “Play this shit in the club for me… / ‘Cause if you in there, then I’ll be the one you never see.” He explicitly calls himself ghost on the third verse: “I’m ghost / Iller than most / I’ve been behind the scenes, I’ve been watching the ropes.” Okay.
Final Thoughts
Hmm, how does “Ghost” by Jaden Smith stack up? To quote Randy Jackson, former American Idol judge extraordinaire, “It was just alright for me dawg.” At just over two minutes in duration, there’s honestly not much here. Furthermore, how many minimalist, trap records come and go that sound exactly like “Ghost?” Way too many. Okay, but not the second coming.
