TTake one look at Jack Harlow, and you probably wouldn’t guess he’s a hip-hop artist.  Don’t get it twisted though, the Louisville, Kentucky bred rapper has some serious swagger as well compelling bars.  After quietly releasing a new album, Confetti, in 2019, he returns with his first brand-new single of 2020, “WHATS POPPIN.”

As you can gather from the title, “WHATS POPPIN” is a banger – a flex-fest.  Jack Harlow has superb production work to spit over, courtesy of JetsonMade and Pooh Beatz.  As far as the lyrics, “WHATS POPPIN” commences with the chorus, which also appears at the end of the song.  This is where the flex begins:

“What’s poppin’?
Brand new whip just hopped in
I got options
I could pass that bitch like Stockton
Just joshin’
I’ma spend this holiday locked in
My body got rid of them toxins
Sports Center, top ten.”

Following the drippy chorus, Jack Harlow drops one verse that certainly doesn’t lack in confidence.  Notably, he references his hometown a couple of times, including the restaurant, Vincenzo’s, as well as the Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball team.  Beyond those shout outs, Harlow offers many clichés – sex (“She heard of my deep stroke”) and money (“Spending money at the club like Sam’s”) primarily.  We’ve ‘been there, done that’ obviously, but again, he possesses confidence, personality, and swagger.

Final Thoughts

Will “WHATS POPPIN” change your life? Absolutely not.  Again, Jack Harlowe offers up clichés as opposed to cutting-edge, innovative bars.  Rappers reference sex, money, and drippy subject matter every day of the year.  That said, what is impressive is the flow, confidence, and the personality – he seems like a dude that definitely enjoys a good time.  That is indeed, “WHATS POPPIN’.”
