Scanning the Charts (5/29/21): J. Cole has one of the biggest launches on the Billboard 200 in 2021 with The Off-Season.
SCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is. I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye. This column isn’t extensive, but rather short and sweet. This week, I picked out SEVEN notable observations from the Billboard 200 , and FIVE observations from the Billboard Hot 100
, with
J. Cole dominating both the Billboard 200 (
The Off-Season) and Hot 100 (numerous songs from The Off-Season, including four in the top 10).
Billboard 200
Grammy-winning rapper
J. Cole debuts robustly at no. 1 with his sixth studio album,
The Off-Season. Per Keith Caulfield of Billboard, The Off-Season moved 282,000 units.
Nicki Minaj debuts in the runner-up spot with the release of her mixtape,
Beam Me Up Scotty, which features a trio of new songs.
The Black Keys launch at no. 6 with their latest LP,
Delta Kream.
Alan Jackson lays claim to the final new debut in the top 10 as
Where Have You Gone launches at no. 9.
St. Vincent secures a top-20 debut with
Daddy’s Home which starts at no. 16. The final debut to grace the top-20 belongs to
ENHYPEN with
Border: Carnival (EP) at no. 18.
Kodak Black gets into the top echelon debut action as
Haitian Boy Kodak bows at no. 25.
The final two debuts in the top half of the Billboard 200 belongs to
Phoebe Bridgers and
Young Nudy respectively. Bridgers’
Copycat Killer (EP) (featuring
Rob Moose) debuts at no. 78 while Nudy’s
DR. EV4L lands at no. 93.
Billboard Hot 100
Olivia Rodrigo earns her second no. 1 single (and second debut at no. 1), following the awesome
“drivers license”, with
“good 4 u”. Both appear on her debut album,
SOUR, released on Friday, May 21.
In addition to his success on the Billboard 200,
J. Cole experiences massive success on the Hot 100 with four singles debuting in the top 10 alone. Those four singles are
“my.life” (featuring
21 Savage and
Morray),
“amari”,
“pride.is.the.devil” (featuring
Lil Baby) and my personal favorite,
“95.south” at nos. 2, 5, 7, and 8 respectively.
Like Cole,
Nicki Minaj also experiences success on the Hot 100. Her top debuting single from
Beam Me Up Scotty is
“Seeing Green” featuring
Drake and
Lil Wayne (no. 12)
Migos debut at no. 38 with their advance single from the highly anticipated
Culture III,
“Straightenin”.
Bella Poarch launches at no. 58 with her eyebrow raising single,
“Build a Bitch”.
