Imagine Dragons returns with their second single of 2017, “Thunder.” First, the alternative band delivered the hard-hitting “Believer.”  While the band has done okay for themselves since Night Visions, none of their singles have topped “Radioactive.” “Thunder,” another respectable addition to their arsenal, also falls short of supplanting their ‘ace-in-the-hole.’

On the first verse, frontman Dan Reynolds clearly had a mind of his own early on in life:

“Just a young gun with a quick fuse
 was uptight, wanna let loose...
Not a yes sir, not a follower...
I was lightening before the thunder.”

The impact is confirmed on the catchy, repetitive chorus:

“Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning and the thunder...”

Lyrically, it’s not deep, but Reynolds and Imagine Dragons makes their point.  A force to be reckoned with? Yes.  Thunder, feel the thunder.

Reynolds revisits the past once more on the second verse, devising a plan to reach superstardom.

“Kids were laughing in my classes
While I was scheming for the masses
Who do you think you are
Dreaming ‘bout being a big star?
You say you’re basic, you say you’re easy
You’re always riding in the back seat
Now I’m smiling from the stage
While you were clapping in the nose bleeds.”

Ah, the second verse supports the Genius take on “Thunder.” Essentially, this is about the come-up.  Reynolds, and likely the rest of Imagine Dragons dreamt about being rock stars, and now it’s come to fruition.  Come-up songs aren’t just for rappers after all – Alternative rock/pop stars can experience thunder as well.

Final Thoughts

So, how does “Thunder” stack up ultimately? All in all, it’s another enjoyable offering from Imagine Dragons.  This isn’t the second coming and arguably, this song isn’t the crème de la crème of 2017.  Still, it’s good even if it fails to be truly great.
