Imagine Dragons, Natural [Photo Credit: Interscope]Grammy-winning alternative band Imagine Dragons remain prolific post-Evolve, returning with “Natural,” their second single of 2018.

Who knows what Imagine Dragons have in the works.  They released their Grammy-nominated third studio album, Evolve, in 2017.  Since then, there have been two new singles in 2018, including “Natural,” released July 17.  Regardless of what their plans may be, fans of the band can be happy to hear Dan Reynolds and company returning with their brand of percussion-heavy angst – or something like that.

“Natural” commences with an enigmatic introduction, composed of a rich choral vocal pad. Confirming the darkness, “Natural” is set in a minor key. The first verse doesn’t begin with a clearly-defined groove.  In other word, it’s sans percussion. After Reynolds begins and continues to sing on the first verse, the ear starts to hear the pulse and see where “Natural” will eventually arrive. The first pre-chorus has more rhythmic definition, though it isn’t until the chorus that the listener is treated to the expected rhythmic, hard-hitting drums.  Besides the gargantuan nature of the chorus, another expectation is fulfilled – catchiness and memorability.

“Natural / A beating heart of stone / You gotta be so cold / To make it in this world / Yeah, you’re a natural / Living your life cutthroat / You gotta be so cold / Yeah, you’re a natural.”

The second verse begins with the groove in place, making it feel more stable than the first.  As always, Reynolds serves up clear, nuanced vocals.  He’s at his beat when he roars, achieving that signature edge.  Even so, the fact that Reynolds exhibits more poise on the bridge, contrasting the heavy chorus is a selling point.

Final Thoughts

Will “Natural” change your life? No, but give the 2018 college football anthem its props.  In my opinion, neither will Imagine Dragons at this point – no disrespect intended.  When they dropped “Radioactive,” they were something like ‘the second coming.’ Okay, not literally, but it was a big deal.  At this point, even with a couple of great records, it might take something more than them being ‘natural’ to really thrill like they did back-when.  Still, “Natural” is a worthwhile listen that has everything that an Imagine Dragons fan enjoys.
