ILoveMakonnen, Tuesday | 1 Hit WONDERful

In the 36^th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2025), we highlight “Tuesday ” performed by ILoveMakonnen featuring Drake.

It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 36^th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2025), we dive into “Tuesday ”, the one-hit wonder by ILoveMakonnen.

“Got the club goin’ up on a Tuesday / Got your girl in the cut and she choosey.” Ooh-wee! So, ILoveMakonnen (Makonnen Sheran), why is the club goin’ up on Tuesday? That would not be the night I’d associate with clubbing, but to each his, her, or their own! Regardless, the rapper struck gold with the melodic club-driven hit, “Tuesday”. It peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.  “Tuesday” was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 57^th Annual Grammy Awards (Eminem and Rihanna would win for “The Monster”). “Tuesday” experienced ample success. However, it would be Makonnen’s sole pop hit.  The rapper charted one other song on the Billboard Hot 100, “I’ve Been Waiting”, credited to him and Lil Peep featuring Fall Out Boy, but it failed to reach the top 40 (it was certified platinum, however). You know what that means… one-hit wonder! Makonnen, Sonny Digital, and Metro Boomin produced it.

So, what made “Tuesday” special? The chorus, excerpted above, is a big reason for the song’s success.  Additionally, Grammy-winning rapper/singer Drake guests on the track.  Drake drops the first verse following Sheran’s irresistible chorus. “You know PARTY and The Weeknd  /  Ain’t got no motherfuckin’ time / To party on the Weeknd.” Well, that explains the Tuesday night clubbin’, doesn’t it? Also, referencing two fellow Canadian artists who earned success after him is clever! On his own verse, ILoveMakonnen also sheds light about the clubbing schedule: “Workin’ Monday night, on the corner flippin’ hard… / Ain’t no fuckin’ time to party on the weekend.” Fair enough.  According to him, he’s been busy trapping… Going back to the hook, notice that he mentions “Got your girl in the cut and she choosey.” Maybe not so much considering he’d come out as gay in 2017… Can rappers be gay? Of course.  Do gay rappers have the same success as straight rappers? Rarely, fair or not.  Ultimately, “Tuesday” is an enjoyable 2010s rap banger from ILoveMakonnen and Drake.
