Iggy Azalea, Mo Bounce © Def JamIggy Azalea attempts to reclaim lost momentum on her latest single, “Mo Bounce.”  The problem is, there’s very little lyrical substance.

Iggy Azalea has been firmly planted on the struggle bus following her breakthrough album, The New Classic.  Simply put, things haven’t gone smoothly for the Aussie rapper.  On her new single, “Mo Bounce,” Iggy Ig is trying to recapture her swag – or something like that.

First and foremost, “Mo Bounce” is infectious to the core.  The groove is impressive, instantly inciting head-nodding.  The synths have a harsh, malicious quality – perfect for capturing darkness and a toughness.  Even if the toughness that Iggy Azalea is selling is questionable, the production work gives her a leg up here.

As for the song itself, “Mo Bounce” is more sound (and vibe) as opposed to substance. That’s clearly the M.O., as this is a turn-up track, not a transcendent record.   Ultimately, what is Iggy saying? Nothing profound that’s for sure, unless “bounce” has suddenly become the mark for profundity.  The repetition is pronounced to the nth degree, like many bangers.  This clearly gets Iggy’s point across, BUT what is the point? Nothing really.

Final Thoughts

So how does “Mo Bounce” stack up for Iggy Azalea? It’s cute, but probably not enough to get her back into the good graces of the rap game.  This is definitely better than “Team,” but the lack of lyrical substance is an issue.  Regardless, “When that shit goes down, the block get loud / In your backyard bumpin’ while we blazin’ out / Make it bounce in the motherf*ckin’ house / Mo bounce in the motherf*ckin’ house!”
