Idina Menzel uplifts on new single “I See You,” the promo single from her forthcoming pop album Idina

Idina Menzel excels at ballads – that may be the understatement of the year.  Face it, as old as it got, Menzel nailed it on Frozen lead single, “Let It Go.” Now, Menzel seeks to promote her forthcoming album, Idina, due September 23, 2016.  Idina is led by promo single, “I See You.”

To reiterate, Idina Menzel sings ballads well. “I See You” is a ballad.  Is this a match made in heaven? It’s not quite angelic, but there’s plenty of celestial pieces in place.

“I See You” begins predictably, trending on the boring side.  Uplifting and inclusive from the jump, the script is cliché. Expectedly, following a lighter first verse, the drums and overall production are fuller during the second verse.

Menzel’s vocal strength on the chorus is excellent.  An extra push – even some subtle background vocals – might’ve made it more exciting.  The chorus isn’t the catchiest, but sufficiently catchy.

“Here’s to the lonely / to the broken-hearted / I want you to know I feel your pain / here’s to the hopeless / the almost forgotten / to those who got lost along the way / I see you…”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “I See You” is respectable, if unexceptional. Much of the song is too ‘middle of the road’. Despite being middle of the road, Menzel “Bring(s) it on Home” by the end, showing off her commanding pipes.  “I See You” has an excellent message, but suffers from sappiness and predictability.
