Fresh off a dominant number one hit, rising Puerto Rican artist iann dior drops a brief, entertaining pop single with “Holding On.”
‘Damn it feels good to have a number one hit.’ I have no doubt that that’s exactly what 🎙 iann dior is saying, or at the least, something similar! You see, iann was featured on the 24kgoldn joint, “Mood”, that has been among the most dominant hits of 2020. He’s back with his own, solo record, 🎵 “Holding On,” which runs a modest two minutes and change. Nonetheless, that’s enough for dior to continue to build his brand – capitalize on success!
“Holding On” is very much idiomatic of modern hip-hop infused pop. How so? Iann dior opts for a melodic, emo-infused approach. This bodes well in his favor while sounding very 2020. Fueling his fire are a couple of things. Sleek production by 🎙 Andrew Luce, 🎙 Omer Fedi, 🎙 KBeaZy, and 🎙 Blake Slatkin definitely provides a lift; he has a lit canvas too paint upon. Perhaps the biggest catalyst is those matters of the heart. Yes, when love comes into play, the song just sort of writes itself.
“I been holdin’ on, don’t know why Love’s not for everyone, but I still try.”
The chorus is nothing we haven’t heard before, but it’s quite effective. Iann truly puts in work on the sole verse, where this girl won’t entertain him. Of course, according to him, she “don’t know shit, huh, you don’t know how I move / … I ain’t tellin’ lies baby, you know that I’m the truth.” Okay… sounds like he’s a bit, um, mad. Same sort of thing goes down on the bridge where he’s an emotional mess and asserts, “You play me like a fool / I’m never comin’ home.”
Final Thoughts 💭
All in all, iann dior drops a brief, entertaining pop record with “Holding On.” It’s not game changing but it’s enjoyable by all means. It will certainly be interesting to see how dior’s career continues to grow and evolve.
