Hykuu, Coming Home [Photo Credit: BonFire]Departing from his usual sound, Madrid-based producer Hykuu enlists Swedish/UK singer/producer Summer Heart for his latest single, “Coming Home.”

“I’ve seen the sun / I heard you laugh / I feel in love / I’ve broken hearts / I’ve tried it all / I wanted more / I’m coming home / I’m coming home.” Sigh. Italian producer Hykuu enlists Swedish/UK indie artist Summer Heart (David Alexander) on his latest single, “Coming Home.” Let that sink in for a moment. If you’re unfamiliar with both artists, perhaps that statement means nothing or very little to you. If you do happen to know something about these two talented artists, it’s clear that they on opposites ends of the spectrum, at least to some extent.  The good news is, that ‘opposites attract,’ which is the case on “Coming Home.”

Summer Heart [Photo Credit: Linda Lomelino]“Coming Home” represents a ‘departure’ of sorts for the Madrid-based Hykuu, who opts for a chiller sound compared to the majority of his music.  Essentially, he ‘goes against the grain’ once more, after already ‘going against the grain’ of the Spanish house/techno movement.  All that considered, it doesn’t mean “Coming Home” is devoid of energy – it’s certainly not.  The music continues to be driving, thanks to his thoughtful choice of synths – rhythmic in nature – and of course, a pretty sick groove.Hykuu This particular song is also set in a major key.  Perhaps characterizing it as ‘exuberant’ might be an overstatement given the degree of mellowness, but it’s definitely happy. Departure or not, the work is put in behind the boards.

Focusing on Hykuu’s partner in crime, Summer Heat complements the backdrop perfectly.  Notably, Alexander’s vocals float atop the production effortlessly, never attempting, nor requiring gospel histrionics. Perhaps the argument can be made for Alexander providing a bit more oomph or punch, but honestly, the chill vocal vibes are, well, a vibe…  The same can be said of the lyrics.

“That although we’re broke we rule the world

‘Cause I am yours and you’re my girl

Staying up all night

Yeah, I promise we’ll be fine.”

“Coming Home” is clearly tailored to the producer/singer’s sensibilities and strengths – he’s renowned for a “distinct, lazy, summer feel.” Doesn’t that make sense though, given the vocalist is more often than not the centerpiece?

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Coming Home” is a chilled-out, hella appealing electronic/pop record.  It’s mellow, but still possesses energy and rhythmic intensity. Both musicians do a nice job in their respective roles.  A great addition to any electronic playlist.
